Jason L'Abbe

Jason L'Abbe, a potter located in Waterloo, Ontario, graduated from the ceramics program at Georgian College in Barrie Ontario. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively in Ontario and Western Canada, and has exhibited in Canada and the United States. L'Abbe identifies his main goal as a potter is the achievement of simplicity; he remarks, "[a] young potter will work hard to learn how to control the clay while a more seasoned craftsman knows you only have to guide it."

L'Abbe works primarily in the medium of stoneware and porcelain. He states that the unique textures and visual qualities of his glazes are produced from wood ash that is gathered from the kiln. "Spontaneous organic patterns" on the piece are created when the minerals, absorbed by the tree during its lifetime, are released upon burning. L'Abbe finds the interaction of fire, wood and minerals ironic: while the wood is being destroyed, it is reborn in the final form of the pottery. He states, "I create the forms but it is the clay, ash, and fire that create the spirit."
