ANNIE E. BROWN: IN MEMORY is an exploration of past and present intersections; of mourning, loss, and meaning. How do we understand death and in what way is it different or similar from generations past? How can we mark and honour the passage of those we love; to remember them with a sense of love more than loss.

Have we misplaced an honest understanding of grief and acknowledgement of death as being an inevitable part of our existence as expressed by our ancestors? Do we need to challenge our response to death as a part of life in contemporary times? Does it make a difference to how we live our lives if we don’t deny the inevitability of what waits for us all?

What are the spiritual lessons we learn from celebrating a life by acknowledging its passing?

Contemporary work created specifically for this exhibition along with historical materials and artefacts will shed light on our living relationships to the past and to death, using a “true” ghost story involving a Victorian woman named Annie E. Brown as inspiration. The artists in this exhibit create works dealing with memories, cycles of life and understanding, and passages that document the intuitive and conscious journey through life to death.
