WATERLOO (ONTARIO) CANADA. August 5, 2010: Building a strong board of directors is one of the key strategies in the soon-to-be-released Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery sustainability plan. Reporting on progress in this regard, Board Chair, Alison Burkett commented “I am thrilled that we have been able to recruit individuals from the community who have the knowledge, commitment and board experience to support the implementation of the sustainability plan. While we will add a few more key people, the nucleus of the board the Gallery needs for a sustainable future is in place. We have achieved our goal of building a strong board.” The Gallery is pleased to announce the following individuals as our 2010/11 Board of Directors:
Alison Burkett (Chair and Acting Treasurer) holds a Bachelor of Math from the University of Waterloo, and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier. She worked at the University of Waterloo, Dominion Life/ Manulife, and Mutual Life before starting a management consulting business 15 years ago. Burkett’s areas of expertise are facilitation and business process design. Burkett and her husband own Gallery on the Grand, a retail fine art and framing gallery. She is a member of the City of Kitchener’s Arts and Culture Advisory Committee. Past volunteer involvement includes Treasurer for Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waterloo Minor Soccer, and Project Lift, a member of the City of Waterloo Committee of Adjustment, and the Networking Breakfast Committee for the Greater KW Chamber of Commerce.
Martin Finestone (Vice-Chair) joined the Waterloo Region office of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP as an associate. Martin practices in the areas of business and technology law, focusing on licensing and new media issues. Martin grew up in Montreal, Quebec and London, Ontario. He obtained a BA in Media, Information and Technoculture from the University of Western Ontario. While at Western, Martin was heavily involved in campus radio at CHRW, both on and off air. Channeling his interests in creativity, communications, and technology into a desire to practice law, Martin completed his articles with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and obtained a Master’s in Law with a Concentration in Law and Technology from the University of Ottawa. Outside of work, Martin enjoys painting, creative writing and seeking out new music.
Armin Froelich is a retired Manulife executive with experience managing large staffs in insurance administration, agency and distribution, and information technology. He has served on the Manulife Japan Board of Directors and the Eclipse Claims Service Board, a joint venture of Manulife and three other insurers.
Holde Gerlach has a law degree from the University of Wuerzburg (Germany). On moving to Waterloo in 1980, since her law degree was not accepted in Canada, she made her "hobby" into a "job" and started a design/ furniture agency for corporate offices, from which she retired in 2009. Holde has been involved in numerous volunteer organizations including the K-W Symphony Orchestra Board and Anselma House Board. She was Executive Member of the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee and chair of their very successful Wine Festival and Auction. Holde was a founding member of Kiwanis Club of Waterloo North. She is also a past member of the Mississauga Board of Trade, and the German-Canadian Business and Professional Association. Currently, Holde sits on the Board of the Grand River Baroque Festival as well as CCGG. Holde is very interested in the arts - visual and performing - and supports it whenever and wherever possible. In fact, Holde was part of the initial fundraising team for CCGG in the 1980’s.
Mary Ann Helmond has taught visual arts at St. David C.S.S. in Waterloo since 1989, 10 years of which she was Arts Program Head. Ann Roberts inspired her knowledge of clay while she worked towards her Honours BA at the University of Waterloo. As a freelance artist she has illustrated three books and completed numerous commissions in calligraphy, painting, drawing and sign painting. Her interest in hot glass began in 2005 and has resulted in annual week-long trips to the Corning Museum of Glass, New York for flameworking courses with master glass artists.
Nancy Mattes is a graduate of the Arts Administration program at the University of Waterloo. She brings more than 20 years of experience in fundraising for not-for-profit organizations in Waterloo Region. Career highlights include receiving a prestigious McConnell Fellowship, completing a successful capital campaign for the King Street Theatre Centre and publishing a character development children's book. Nancy is currently the Acting Director of Advancement for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. In 2009 she raised more than $5 million dollars for the Faculty.
Tom Mennill is a Chartered Accountant and a Partner in the accounting firm of KPMG LLP, where he has practiced for over 25 years. Tom has extensive experience with community and professional organizations, including most notably 10 years through 2009 as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Tom's tenure at KWAG included a three-year term as President, as well having served as Treasurer, First Vice-President and Past President of the organization. He also is currently incoming First Vice President of the Rotary Club of Kitchener, and is active in several of the committees of the Rotary Club. Tom will be President of the club in 2012.
Carol Taylor is the Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Cambridge and North Dumfries. She has also been the Executive Director of the Volunteer Action Centre of K-W & Area and before that Epilepsy Waterloo-Wellington. She has experience leading teams of staff and volunteers. Carol is a graduate of Leadership Waterloo Region and has served on the Board of Directors of Block Parents, Waterloo Minor Soccer and the Canadian Caribbean Cultural Association of Waterloo Region. Presently she serves on the Screening and Selection Committee and Alumni Council of Leadership Waterloo Region.
Brian Thomas is a local businessman and successful entrepreneur. He is the son of the late Doreen Thomas, who as a Waterloo City Councillor, spearheaded the campaign to bring the Gallery to Waterloo along with the City’s Chief Administrative Office, Don Roughly. Waterloo competed with Halifax, North York, Calgary, and Victoria and won. In a nation-wide ballot the members of Ceramists Canada gave a clear mandate for the Gallery to be located in Waterloo. Brian is committed to continuing his mother’s legacy by contributing to various projects related to the Gallery’s sustainability plan.
Stephanie Kirkwood Walker is an author, scholar and visual artist. She has a PhD in Religion & Culture, taught at WLU, and writes on perception and the arts, biography, and heritage matters. Her studio work is primarily in textiles. Currently she represents the Waterloo Historical Society on the City of Waterloo Advisory Committee on Culture and is on the Board of the Friends of Joseph Schneider Haus. She has also served as a Waterloo Region District School Board trustee and on the Student Accommodation Study Advisory Committee.
Bill Poole (Interim Executive Director and Secretary). Prior to joining CCGG in June 2010, Bill was the Director of the Centre for Cultural Management at the University of Waterloo for 20 years. His resume as a cultural administrator includes work at the Shaw Festival, the National Ballet of Canada and the National Ballet School. Bill was recipient of a Special Jury Award at the 2001 Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Awards and the Association of Cultural Executives ACE Award in 2005. He also brings a broad perspective on the role of culture having served on both Waterloo’s and Kitchener’s municipal cultural advisory committees and presently sits on the Ontario-wide Minister’s Advisory Council for Arts and Culture.
Robert J. Williams (Past Chair) was a faculty member in the department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo from 1971-2006. Robert is a founding member of the Canadian Cultural Research Network and is a Member of the National Advisory Council, Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo. He is a former member (and President) of the Waterloo Regional Arts Council and the former Vice-Chair of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Volunteer Committee. He presently serves as a board member for Municipal Cultural Planning Incorporated, and is Chair of the City of Waterloo’s Advisory Committee on Culture.
Jan D’Ailly (Councillor, City of Waterloo) Jan is past chair of the Finance and Strategic Planning Committee, and sits or has sat on a number of committees including the Audit Committee (past), Waterloo Economic Development Committee (current), Community Cash Grants Committee (past), the Town and Gown Committee (current), Uptown Vision Committee (current), Trails and Transportation Committee (current). He is the City of Waterloo appointee to the CCGG Board, Board Member of Waterloo North Hydro (past), and Town and Gown Association of Ontario (current). He is also Commodore of the Conestoga Sailing Club.Jan holds a BA Honours Economics from McGill and an MBA from The Richard Ivey School of Business. He has had 15 years of strategic planning, business development and business management in the power industry at General Electric, Glegg Water Conditioning and Babcock and Wilcox. Jan is currently CEO in Organic Energy Inc, a small-scale waste-to-energy gasification technology company.
Betty Anne Keller (City Liaison) is Cultural Manager, City of Waterloo. She is Past President of the Board of the Creative City Network of Canada.
WATERLOO (ONTARIO) CANADA. July 21, 2010: EMPTY BOWLS 2010 RAISES $18,418 FOR THE FOOD BANK OF WATERLOO REGION
On Friday, July 23 at 2:30pm The Food Bank of Waterloo Region will be presented with a cheque for $18,418 raised at the 12th annual Empty Bowls. The cheque will be presented to Wendi Campbell (Executive Director, Food Bank Waterloo Region), by Cobie Wesseling and Laurie Cowell of the Waterloo Potters’ Workshop.
On May 20, 2010 over 455 people came to the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery to select a beautiful one-of-a-kind pottery bowl made by members of the Waterloo Potters’ Workshop while enjoying delicious soups and breads provided by local chefs, restaurants, and bakeries. This annual fundraiser helps ensure The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is able to meet the growing need for emergency food in our community. It was a great day for food bank supporters, the Waterloo Potters Workshop and other ticket buyers. All came to share good food and good times, while contributing to those less fortunate.
The event was generously organized by the Waterloo Potters’ Workshop and hosted by the Gallery. Funds collected by this year’s EMPTY BOWLS, brings the grand total raised by the event to over $146,785 For each $1 donated The Food Bank is able to distribute over $8 worth of emergency food through over 75 community food programs to the adults and children in Waterloo Region needing help. It is an important time of the year for the food bank to receive this kind of support since traditionally support is not as high during the summer months.

WATERLOO (ONTARIO) CANADA. May 19, 2010: The Annual General Meeting of the members of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery will be held at the Gallery, 25 Caroline St., Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 2Y5, on June 17, 2010 at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting agenda includes receiving and considering the financial statements for the financial year ended March 31, 2010 and the auditor's report thereon, the election of Board members and a presentation on the Gallery's sustainability plan, due to go the Waterloo City Council in July.
There will be a reception at 5:00 and the Annual General Meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. sharp.
It is an exciting time at the Gallery and we are optimistic about moving forward with our sustainability plan into the new year.

CCGG Announces Interim Director
The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery (CCGG) Board announced today that the Executive Director of the Gallery, Robert Achtemichuk, has taken an extended sick leave based on medical advice.
The Board is also able to announce today that, as a result of a set of coincidences, William D. (Bill) Poole is able to step into the Interim ED role almost immediately. Mr. Poole, Director of the Centre for Cultural Management at the University of Waterloo, will be retiring from the University on June 1 and will bring considerable experience in cultural management to the Gallery over the next few months.
His resume as a cultural administrator includes work at the Shaw Festival, the National Ballet of Canada and the National Ballet School. Bill was recipient of the Special Jury Award at the 2001 Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Awards and the Association of Cultural Executives Ace Award in 2005. He also brings a broad perspective on the role of culture having served on both Waterloo's and Kitchener's municipal cultural advisory committees and presently sits on the Ontario-wide Minister's Advisory Council for Arts and Culture. Robert Williams, Chair of the Gallery Board, said, “We feel very fortunate that Bill is able to step into a leadership role on short notice. His experience and skills will add tremendous value to the Board's work at this time.”
Given the work now underway on the development of a sustainability plan for the Gallery, the Board is confident that Bill Poole will make a valuable contribution to the implementation of the plan. Mr. Poole said this week “I'm excited about the opportunity to work with the board and staff of CCGG.”
