Barkhouse’s work belongs to the ancient traditions of making myths the highest of the human imagination’s engagement affirming a world that is our home but which we so easily seem to make an alien place. Barkhouse belongs to the Nimpkish band, Kwakiutl First Nation. Her sculptural work examines environmental concerns and indigenous culture through the use of animal imagery. Wolves, ravens, moose and beavers are set against diverse backgrounds. In Boreal Baroque, the setting for the work is inspired by the palatial grounds at Versailles where the wild is juxtaposed with the wildly opulent. |
